Now Introducing: The Uncommon Corps

As you know, through our Better to Give program, we've been able to build a better business by connecting our customers with nonprofits around the globe. With every purchase customers make, we're proud to donate $1 to the nonprofit of their choice.

Now, thanks to the overwhelming support of our team members, we want to expand on our efforts by creating the Uncommon Corps, a program offered by UncommonGoods to develop volunteer opportunities that tie in with our Better to Give partners. In order to challenge our team, we have set an annual company goal of 750 volunteer hours by our team.

Uncommon Corps: Reach Out and Read Event

In moving forward with supporting our Better to Give partners beyond monetary donations, we are partnering with Reach Out and Read to host a reading event at Lutheran Children’s Health (our neighbors) on Friday, July 8th from 2:00-4:30pm. The event will have our Uncommon Corps volunteers read to young children, either in groups or one on one depending on the volunteer's comfort level. Representatives from Reach Out and Read will be here at UG on June 27th from 1:30-2:00pm to speak to us about the program and to our interested team members about the July 8th event.

Volunteers can read to children in a group or one on one.
Reach Out and Read became a Better to Give partner in early 2014. Their programs promote early literacy and school readiness for young children and their families in all 50 states through support from medical professionals. Each year, medical providers at the nearly 5,000 Reach Out and Read program sites nationwide distribute 6.5 million books to children and invaluable literacy advice to parents. Annually, 354,058 children are served here in New York through 306 Reach Out and Read Programs.

We're looking forward to welcoming Reach Out and Read to our campus and even more so for the event in July.  If you would like to attend the reading event, you must attend the 30-minute information session. Please RSVP to Sean (scullen@uncommongoods.com) no later than the end of the day on Friday, June 24.  We need to get a head count so that we can make appropriate arrangements.
