B With Us: Better World Books

Way back in 2016 we successfully completed our 2016 B Corp Impact Assessment. For those new to the team, B Corps are businesses that are certified by the nonprofit B Lab, which indicates that they meet high standards in the key areas of environment, workers, customers, community and governance. B with Us will be an ongoing series of posts that feature fellow B Corp members. 

Our first featured B Corp is BetterWorldBooks, a company that buys and sells books online and donates money to help fund literacy initiatives. If you are looking for affordable books, BetterWorldBooks offers great deals for a good cause.

Within Five: Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company

UncommonGoods is located within five miles of unique community staples that are worthy of exploration. Every “Within Five” post will focus on a spot within five miles of UncommonGoods that dares to be different and/or does good. 

Our first focus is on the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company (est. 2004), located 3.2 miles from the Brooklyn Army Terminal. The shop offers a plethora of products for the budding superhero, whether it's a cape, secret identity, or even a gallon of immortality (for when there aren’t enough hours in the day). However, the real superheroes can be found behind a secret door where 826NYC, a non-profit and free tutoring center, hosts workshops and tutoring hours to support students ages 6-18. 

The shop is open every day from 11am-5pm and staffed entirely by volunteers. Check it out!

The Georgia L. McMurray BATKids Center is located inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal and offers child care for children and superhero prodigies ages 2-5, with eligibility based on family size and income.  The center provides the following:

• Bilingual teachers in English/Spanish and English/Mandarin
• Low cost fees
• Breakfast and lunch prepared in-house, afternoon snacks
