Within 5: Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Free Event)

Monday, January 18, 2016, at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House

Looking for a way to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. in Brooklyn? Every January, artists, activists, civic leaders, and community members come together in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House to honor the legacy and share the dream of Dr. King. The largest event of its kind in New York City, this celebration is presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Borough President and Medgar Evers College, and has been a BAM tradition since 1990.

In conjunction with the event, BAMcafĂ© Live features a weekend of music programming inspired by Dr. King’s vision of social activism and equality. This year, Michael Eric Dyson (author of April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death and How it Changed America) is the keynote speaker at BAM’s yearly celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Following the speech are performances by the Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir and The Voice finalist Kimberly Nichole, as well as the community art exhibition “Picture the Dream” by NYCHA Atlantic Terminal Community Center students.
