Help Test Our Products!

The blog team is looking for volunteers to put products to the Gift Lab test and write about it.

What is a Gift Lab?

To Gift Lab or Not to Gift Lab...
A short blog post using the “scientific method” to show how an uncommon good works. You’ll complete these steps:
  1. Research (What did you do to prepare for the Gift Lab?)
  2. Hypothesis (What do you think will happen?)
  3. Experiment (How did you test the product?)
  4. Conclusion (How did it all turn out?)

Are there any rules?

Only a few:
  • The product you choose should have some testable element.
  • The product (or combination of products) should cost less than $100 retail.
  • You can’t test something that’s already been featured in a Gift Lab . (Check them out at http://blog.uncommongoods.com/tag/gift-lab/)
  • You get to keep the product(s) you select in exchange for writing the blog post and taking photos. If you don’t complete the post, you may be asked to return the item or pay for it.
  • Gift Labs must be approved by Cassie, our blog editor.

How do I sign up?

Uncommon Collectives

Internal groups have been renamed Uncommon Collectives! Below you will find brief breakdowns of each as the introduction of our two latest collectives:
  • The Uncommon Theory Collective
  • The Fitness Collective
Join these groups to exercise your mind and body while spending time with the uncommon crew.

Uncommon Theory Collective, written and led by Brian Hashemi, Director of Marketing

Overview:

Brian Hashemi
Over the years, we’ve read many books together as a department in Marketing. They’ve usually been based around some interesting concept or theory related to our business, recommended to me by a team member or someone else in the industry.  I’ve found this to be really useful – it’s often united us in a common way of thinking, or gotten us focused on a new way of organizing our work, or enabled us to learn a new way of doing things.  (For example, reading The Lean Startup got us much more focused on agile development; reading Customers Included got us much more focused on customer listening.)

Somebody recommended that I organize a wider group to read books like this. The hope is to accomplish similar things, but across departments – so we get more alignment and more impact, as well as just more bonding by giving people across departments a chance to discuss and debate ideas. And hopefully, we all learn something new along the way.

So here’s what we’ll do. Each month, we’ll select a new book for group discussion.  For each book, we’ll schedule a set number of discussion sessions. You don’t need to commit to more than one book at a time – so, if you’re interested in this month’s book, you can sign up for it, but if you want to skip next month, that’s fine.  We’ll keep the discussion groups fairly small and tight-knit, and we’ll tailor the discussions to the makeup of each group. So don’t worry about your level of expertise on a certain subject – if we’re reading The Lean Startup and you don’t have any experience in agile development but want to learn more, or if you know a lot about agile development and want to discuss the finer details of how we implement it at UG, we’ll try to pair you with people at a similar level in the discussion group.  (And UG will be providing copies of the books, so don’t worry about that either.)

The first book we’ll read is Customers IncludedThis book is about shaping the customer experience through the simple act of listening to customers. The author lays out a bunch of examples of companies that have done this well, and ones that haven’t. He also lays out a methodology for what comprises good customer listening. This book has influenced a lot of the work we’ve done with user testing and customer interviews, and has gotten us to focus a lot more on making sure our project specifically address customer needs, which sounds like it should be obvious, but often isn’t.  Plus, our Creative and Marketing teams are working on setting up a live customer listening session with the book’s author in June, so I wanted to give as many people as possible a chance to read the book before that event.

Other books that we’ll read in coming months include things like: The Lean Startup, Influence, How to Measure Anything, Drive, The Paradox of Choice, and many others.  Also, I’m always on the lookout for new recommendations – so if you have something you think others in the company will benefit from reading, send it my way!

This group will focus on a new book each month and run throughout the year. You can sign-up here. Have a question? Email brian@uncommongoods.com

Our Uncommon Table

The team building group has rebranded company lunch and company snack. All food related activities are referred to as Uncommon Table. Also, we’re bringing back department sponsored lunches and snacks to increase food variety, teamwork within the department, and overall company morale! Every department will have the opportunity to plan and execute a company event- YOU decide on everything, from the menu to the decorations. The departments in the team building group will be represented first, then Anita will randomly select a different, interested department the first week of every month. The Books for Bubby Children's Book Drive

Call for Books for Children Under 12 Years Old
The Books for Bubby Books Drive is in memory of Sylvia Pecker, a former NYC school teacher and family member of our own Brad Allen, established to collect books for children who might not otherwise have them. This year, the books will be collected for the Osborne Association, a seasonal partnering organization which has an 80-year history in working with currently and formerly incarcerated men, women, children, and families affected by the incarceration of a loved one.

The Osborne Association has seven hospitality centers across New York State, where families wait on their way to see their loved ones in prison. These are bare bones facilities, and the Osborne staff has communicated that book donations would help create a more friendly environment for young children, while giving families a way to pass stressful time. The drive is looking to collect books for all seven locations and here is how we can help:

1. Pick a book - You can pick your favorite children's book (for any age from infant up to 12 years old), find a new book that looks awesome, or pick a book from this list that the drive organizers put together.

2. Buy it -  The Bubby team recommends Powell's City of Books—an independent union book store (additionally 7.5% of every sale goes directly to support the workers of ILWU Local 5 if you access the site from the links above). Books can also be purchased at fellow B-Corp, Better World Books.

3. Bring the books to Brad or have them shipped directly by June 15th - You can bring the books to Brad's desk in the TechOps room (located just to the left of the 2B entrance way) and he will deliver them personally. If buying online, they can ship to the address listed below:

Mark Pecker, MD
Hypertension Center
Weill Cornell Medical Center

May Anniversaries!

Happy Anniversary to our May starts. If each team member was present for every snack, they would have enjoyed a total of 432 snacks! If each company snack was a veggie platter and hummus, and each team member ate 10 veggies sticks dipped in hummus, together they would have eaten a lot of veggie sticks and hummus.
Thank you for contributing to our story!
