Top Three Ways We
Celebrated Earth Week
Earth Week 2015 saw our team caring for over 20 trees in our neighborhood,
beautifying the BAT campus, salvaging box planters and showing off our environmentally
friendly practices on Instagram with the hashtag #UGComPost. None of this would have been possible without our volunteer participants and support
from the UG team. Here's more about the top three ways we celebrated Earth Week as
a team:
1. We
picked up litter, mulched and planted in our community.
Apparently, striped tops were mandatory. |
Earth Day
was the date of our main event, the planting and beautification of the Brooklyn
Army Terminal and caring for street trees around our community. The pending
storm held off during the morning and early afternoon, which gave our team
enough time to pick up trash, lay mulch, and plant. Anita and Dylan organized
the event with support from Jen, Robert, Sean, Kenneth and Emily.
Special thanks to our
volunteers: Dave,
Fabian, Susanna, Melissa, Erica, Sharon,
Sha'Ron, Sheronne, Philomena, Rachel, Jason, Delia, Joanne, Hannah, Katy, Ed,
Katherine, Maleeza, Matt, Ryan, Candace, Megan, Abi, Akeem, Shah, Cassie,
Roman, Brian, Mark, Eugene, Orlando, Daniella, Althea and Samesha.
2. We
salvaged plant boxes and repurposed pallets for new planters.

Our team
planted nearly 100 plants in total in several areas, including in our elevator
lobbies and our new planters. Team members pitched in time throughout the
week to salvage box planters and pallets to create the vision established
during our Planter
Design Challenge. The designs were executed by Bernye and Mabel with help from the skilled hands of Hannah, Katie
L., Megan, Daniella, Samesha, Althea, Matt D., Gloria, Lee, Rebecca D., Nikki,
Norma, Jona, Rebecca M., Maritza, Tom R., and Claire F.
3. We
used social media to promote eco-minded practices.
The weather
didn't cooperate at the beginning of the week, but that didn't stop the
Purchasing and Product Development Team from tallying an early lead for this
year’s Community Post Challenge.
By the end of the challenge, they had over double the amount of points than
any other team. Their star-studded, eco-minded
posts are worth a Click.
