Supporting Hurricane Relief Efforts

In response to Harvey and Irma, we are partnering with Americares, an emergency response and global health organization, to help support hurricane victims through our Better to Give program.

A former Better to Give partner, Americares has been on-the-ground in Texas since August 25 to provide medicine and supplies to those affected by Harvey’s record-breaking rainfall and flooding. In addition to Americares continued Hurricane Harvey relief work, they have deployed a team to Puerto Rico to assist in emergency response for Hurricane Irma. Americares also has staff prepositioned in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and has a team ready to deploy to Florida.

Americares has been a Better to Give option at checkout since August 31. If you would like to donate directly to the Americares Hurricane Relief Fund, please visit americares.org.

Help Test Our Products!

The blog team is looking for volunteers to put products to the Gift Lab test and write about it.

What is a Gift Lab?

To Gift Lab or Not to Gift Lab...
A short blog post using the “scientific method” to show how an uncommon good works. You’ll complete these steps:
  1. Research (What did you do to prepare for the Gift Lab?)
  2. Hypothesis (What do you think will happen?)
  3. Experiment (How did you test the product?)
  4. Conclusion (How did it all turn out?)

Are there any rules?

Only a few:
  • The product you choose should have some testable element.
  • The product (or combination of products) should cost less than $100 retail.
  • You can’t test something that’s already been featured in a Gift Lab . (Check them out at http://blog.uncommongoods.com/tag/gift-lab/)
  • You get to keep the product(s) you select in exchange for writing the blog post and taking photos. If you don’t complete the post, you may be asked to return the item or pay for it.
  • Gift Labs must be approved by Cassie, our blog editor.

How do I sign up?

Email Cassie@uncommongoods.com !

Solar Eclipse: 8/21

On August 21, a solar eclipse will occur where about 99.4% of the Sun will be covered in certain parts of the U.S. (not including our area). I was going to write more about where it will be seen in NYC, but then I found this link about the eclipse on The Gothamist, which has it covered. Spoiler alert (or cliff notes version of the article): we will see a partial eclipse, where around 71% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon. This will begin at 1:23 and end at 4 p.m.
Time to check out the eclipse.

Midsummer Festival: June 23

Photo: Tim Soter/Consulate General of Sweden in New York
On Friday, June 23, the annual Swedish Midsummer Festival will once again take place in Battery Park City in downtown Manhattan.
At this unique celebration, adults and children come together to picnic in the grass, decorate the midsummer pole, make flower wreaths, play traditional games and dance to authentic fiddle music. The festival includes both Robert F. Wagner Park and the adjoining Pier A Plaza.
The program features traditional music by Paul Dahlin and fiddlers from the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, folk dances with Barnklubben Elsa Rix, pole dancing led by Scandinavian folklorist and singer Ross Sutter, and a musical performance by Oskar Stenmark Trio. Food stands offer delicacies from New York's finest Swedish restaurants and food purveyors, including FIKA, Nordic Preserves, Red Rooster Harlem, Smörgås Chef/Crêpes du Nord, Sockerbit Sweet & Swedish, The Shop at Scandinavia House, and Pier A.
